Abstract
This chapter provides guidance for graduating emergency medicine residents who are applying and interviewing for their first job as an attending physician. First, identify a practice model that fits the applicant’s strengths and preferences (academic vs community and rural vs urban). Research job opportunities by location, cast a wide net, and leverage connections and online resources such as LinkedIn and Doximity. The interview process requires preparation and formulation of a strategy to maximize fit, as fit is paramount to longevity. During the interview, the applicant should communicate strengths, skills, and value to the potential employer. The job market for emergency medicine residents is currently very favorable, and the first job need not be the last, as any opportunity to learn and work will be valuable experience.
