Abstract

• Deswelling occurs when ethanol mass fraction is within the range (0.1-0.5) in coexisting liquid phase. Model clearly captures this deswelling phenomena. • Swelling of N-isopropyl acrylamide hydrogel in aqueous ethanol solution is dominated by solvent-solvent interactions and solvent-segment interactions. • Excess Helmholtz energy of the hydrogel network is found insignificant compared to the excess Gibbs free energy of the gel. • Effective molar volume of the PNIPAAm polymer in hydrogel network is found half of the value use in linear PNIPAAm polymer.
