Abstract
Splenectomy, with or without biliary operation, has been performed in 20 patients with hereditary spherocytosis. Detailed investigation of the biliary tract before operation is essential because of the high incidence of associated disease. More than half the patients had complicating gallstones. The results in this series support the view that simultaneous splenectomy and correction of the biliary disease can be performed safely and that there is no need to stage the procedures.
