Abstract

The Precision Medicine Initiative of 2015 focused its message on “delivering the right treatments, at the right time, every time to the right person.” The premise in the subsequent roll out was that “more precise” healthcare improves the quality of care at reduced costs. While considerable advancements have been made since then, most medical treatments to date continue to be delivered for the “average patient”. This leaves patients who do not respond within the bounds of “average range” with less-than-optimal options for diagnosis and treatment. Coordinated efforts to integrate individual differences in people's genes, environments and lifestyles can be part of the solution in dealing with the health challenges faced by these patients. Access to these types of data requires concerted patient, community and stakeholder engagement and education efforts.
