Abstract

Current bladder cancer studies predominantly investigate tumor cell-intrinsic properties and tumor cell inherent mechanisms driving tumor development. The bladder tumor microenvironment, despite its significance, remains relatively understudied. It serves as a crucial tumor cell extrinsic factor, facilitating the malignant progression of cancer cells during tumor development. This chapter aims to provide an overview of current understanding and recent advances concerning the impact of the stromal cell compartment, associated extracellular matrix components, and the coexisting microbiome within the bladder tumor microenvironment on bladder cancer development.
