Abstract

All isomers of tetrachlorodibenzofuran (with the exception of 1,2,8,9 - TCDF) were unambiguously synthesized via the base-catalyzed cyclization of the appropriate hydroxy-PCB precursors. The standards were found to have a mean purity in excess of 94%. Chromatographic characterization of the TCDF's on a 30m DB5 column and a 60m SP2331 column showed excellent agreement with previous qualitative assignments. The current for TCDF molecular ions was found to maximize in the 60 - 70 eV range. Considerable variability in the mass spectrometric response factors for TCDF molecular ions relative to the 2,3,7,8 isomer has been demonstrated, with values ranging from 0.42 to 2.9.
