Abstract
Of 132 consecutive cases of macular hole surgery, 120 (91%) had closure of the hole after the initial procedure. Of these 120 eyes 5 (4.2%) had a re- opening of the hole between 7 and 63 months (mean 25.2 months) after the initial surgery. All five eyes underwent re-operation, which was successful in closing the hole and improving visual acuity in all cases. Two of these holes again re-opened 2,5 and 28 months after the second surgery, both underwent a third procedure which was successful in closing the holes and improving visual acuity. Repeat vitrectomy can result in re-closure and improvement of vision, even after a third surgery.
