Abstract

Sports-related concussion (SRC) is one of the biggest health concerns today for youth athletes. Just a few short years ago an athlete would have returned to a game after sustaining a concussion even if symptomatic and applauded for their courage. The times have changed and SRC are finally recognized for being a legitimate brain injury requiring proper diagnosis and treatment. The chapter is designed for parents of children you play contact sports and want to be better informed about sports-related concussions so that they understand what it is, how it can be treated and how it interacts with return to school. This chapter will first define what a sports concussion, describe the mechanism involved in getting one and discuss the frequency at which it occurs with attention to different sports and gender. The chapter will then discuss signs and symptoms, immediate care, recovery, and treatment, long-term effects, and returns to play from concussions. Lastly issues of helmets, state laws, and prevention and education are discussed.
