An equivalent rod method is proposed for the approximate calculation of the buckling load of multispan suspension bridges for carrying pipelines which are stiffened at the height of the pipes by horizontal wind trusses consisting of cables. All unloaded and loaded cables are referred to as single elements by means of a modified modulus of elasticity. Several examples show, that the approximation obtained is normally sufficient for the design of such bridges. The limits of the formulas are discussed. Also investigated is the deformability of these bridges under increasing load.
