Abstract

To conclude, the Vascular Academic Award of the NHLBI has galvanized the new field of vascular medicine. At our own institution it has brought together a diverse group of physicians and scientists that represent the wide spectrum of vascular biology and medicine. In this multidisciplinary milieu, a new generation of vascular internists and biologists are being trained. The clinical and scientific collaborations spawned by this award have led to basic research insights and will result in new clinical strategies. The result of all of this activity will be improved health care for our citizens, at lower cost. I thank Dr. Robinson and his colleagues at NHLBI for giving me the opportunity to present this report today, and I am grateful for their continued leadership in this evolving discipline of vascular medicine.
