Abstract

Seventeen patients with renal cell carcinoma have been studied in a prospective fashion to determine the relationship between renal vein tumor thrombus and proteinuria. Four patients had renal vein tumor thrombus, and all had significant proteinuria. The 13 patients without tumor thrombus in the renal vein did not have an elevated urinary protein. Use of this simple measurement may be very useful in determining preoperatively those patients who have extension of tumor into the renal vein.
