title = "Referable Macular Hemorrhage-A Clinically Meaningful Screening Target in Newborn Infants. Position Statement of the Association of Pediatric Retina Surgeons",
abstract = "Universal newborn eye screening facilitates early diagnosis of ocular abnormalities and mitigates vision loss. “Referral warranted” eye disease is present at birth in about 5.5% of term infants, with “macular hemorrhage impinging on the fovea” representing about 50% of referral warranted disease. The Association of Pediatric Retina Surgeons held a symposium on February 9, 2021 that culminated in a position statement on “referable macular hemorrhage” (RMH) in newborn infants. RMH is meaningful in that in can cause amblyopia through deprivation, can be readily captured with wide-angle photography in a safe and efficient manner, and may lead to early intervention with mitigation of vision loss.",

note = "Funding Information: On February 9, 2021, the Association of Pediatric Retina Surgeons (APRS) hosted a symposium on newborn macular hemorrhages to discuss the clinical meaningfulness of screening for a specific type of macular hemorrhage—herein termed “referable macular hemorrhage”—that could induce amblyopia through deprivation. The meeting was supported by an unrestricted grant from Pr3vent, Inc., and hosted without any company representation or participants by an independent agency. The meeting attendees were digitally registered (accounted for >60% of the APRS membership), and the meeting itself was recorded, transcribed, and archived for public viewing and is accessible at https://vimeo.com/548202443 (password #aprs2021). The meeting had the following format: • Introduction (5 minutes)—Michael T. Trese, MD, OD, President of the APRS • Overview of Universal Newborn Eye Screening (10 minutes)—Edward H. Wood, MD • Newborn Macular Hemorrhages and Amblyopia (10 minutes)—Natalia F. Callaway, MD • Panel Discussion (45 minutes)—Antonio Ca-pone, Jr, MD, Moderator Publisher Copyright: {\textcopyright} Ophthalmic Surgery, Lasers & Imaging Retina",
