Abstract

This is a review of the recent progress of lossless and lossy radiologic image compression. The legal challenges of using lossy compression of medical records are accounted for. This review is organized as follows; (a) the fundamental concepts of radiologic imaging and digitization are described, (b) current compression technology in the field of medical imaging are examined while the important regulatory policies and legal questions facing the use of compression in this field are discussed, and (c) a summary of future challenges and research directions is presented.
