Abstract
Left ventricular (LV) diastolic function is determined invasively by measurements of LV time constant of relaxation, chamber stiffness, and LV diastolic pressures. In individuals with normal diastolic function, predominant LV filling occurs in early diastole. With impaired LV relaxation, LV filling depends more on the duration of diastole and the contribution of left atrium (LA) contraction. With progression of diastolic dysfunction, elevated LA pressure occurs and is accompanied by symptoms of shortness of breath.
