Abstract

Surgical endoscopy has evolved rapidly in the last four decades with innovative platforms and technology that continue to push the boundaries of minimally invasive gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery. In this chapter, we discuss the history of surgical endoscopy and review multiple operating platforms. Traditional endoscope-assisted visualization platforms as well as integrated visual function platforms and more novel robotic platforms are highlighted. While several operating platforms require further study and data prior to widespread clinical adoption, these technologies seek to provide minimally invasive treatment options for a variety of endoluminal interventions.
