Abstract
The birth of nuclear receptors took place at the end of the 1950s when Elwood Jensen discovered specific binding of tritium-labelled oestradiol-17β in the uterus, a known target of oestrogens. Over the following years, Jensen and collaborators, e.g. Jacobsen and Gorski, identified the oestradiolconcentrating mechanism as a high-affinity low-capacity soluble receptor which was termed the ER (oestrogen receptor)1
