Abstract

Numerical simulations are presented of the evolution of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in a spatially evolving two dimensional shear layer. The results of these simulations are used to study the transitional region of a subsonic, compressible, axisymmetric free jet, at very high Reynolds number and to calculate pressures and momentum fluxes based on the primitive flow variables. The results indicate that the mean static pressure drops significantly within the jet accounting for growth in the streamwise momentum flux. The sensitivity of the results to unsteady initial conditions is investigated. (from authors' abstract)
