Abstract
Neurologic infection by the human retrovirus HTLV-I is worldwide recognized. Viral associated myelopathy was described in Japan (HAM) and in tropical countries (TSP) as identical syndromes. We will review the distribution around the world, including Ecuador. Transmission mechanism, clinical, ethiologic and inmunologic considerations will also be reviewed; although there is no effective treatment for this condition, we will comment on the antiretroviral, immunosuppressive and inmunomodulatory therapy.
