Multi-scale homogenization of granular media

The micromechanical theory of granular media, recently introduced by the authors, is here discussed in terms of homogenization concepts, and is employed to analyze the problem of a granular half-space subject to a concentrated compressive load at the free boundary. By contrast with the classical solution of Flamant, tensile microstresses are shown to exist. This provides a solution for the decades-old problem of the tensile openings in supporting geotechnical materials.
