Abstract

Due to advances in pediatric anesthesia and surgical techniques over recent decades, children born with complex congenital heart disease increasingly survive to adulthood and often desire to have families. The dynamic hemodynamic changes of pregnancy pose unique cardiovascular risks for patients with complex congenital heart disease. This chapter reviews several of the more common complex congenital heart conditions encountered in an ACHD practice, reviews the anatomy, physiology, and potential complications that may occur with pregnancy, and reviews management strategies to ensure best outcomes for both mother and baby.
