Abstract

Discusses the definition of coherent structures, noting use of image processing in delineation of these structures. Examines formation, education and the concept of preferred mode. Discusses aspects such as negative production, coherent structures and jet noise, the preferred mode and pairing in axisymmetric jet, elliptic jet behaviour and the whistler jet (shear layer tone phenomenon). Discusses studies on natural structures in axisymmetric and plane mixing layers, noting the existence of vortex 'ribs'. (C.J.U.)
