Abstract
The importance of the contribution made by Dr. Harold Ridley cannot be overstated. He was the first surgeon to implant an artificial intraocular lens (IOLs) after he noticed that injured British pilots tolerated retained plastic intraocular fragments from their airplane canopies. Dr. Ridley postulated that an IOL could be developed using a similar inert material. Dr. Ridley’s persistence despite significant problems with his initial IOL design led to our modern IOLs.
