Hormones are known to modulate macrophage metabolism and function. This manuscript briefly reviews the influence of sex hormones on macrophage function and examines the effect of a synthetic oestrogen, diethylstilbestrol, on liposome clearance and recognition by mouse Kupffer cells and spleen macrophages.
