Abstract

Normal and pathological histological anatomy of the esophagus is essential for the surgeon and gastroenterologist to understand and recognize. A variety of esophageal pathologies are diagnosed based on histological appearance and this has implications for continued treatment, e.g. Barrett’s esophagus or prognosis, e.g. esophageal cancer. Close teamwork between the histopathologists and surgeons/gastroenterologists is key to ensuring high quality patient care and outcomes.
