Abstract
Enterococci are a leading cause of health care-associated infections and often present a therapeutic challenge to physicians due to both intrinsic and acquired resistance to antibiotics. The Streptococcus gallolyticus group of organisms are a notable cause of bacteremia and endocarditis, especially in patients with gastrointestinal malignancy. Leuconostoc spp. colonize the gastrointestinal tract of humans and sporadically cause disease, typically in immunosuppressed individuals. This chapter reviews the microbiology, epidemiology, clinical presentations, and approach to therapy of infections caused by enterococci, members of the Streptococcus gallolyticus group, and Leuconostoc spp.
