Abstract

We analyzed 6256 pediatric stool cultures and found that 11.4% were positive, with declining positivity rates as the age of the tested patients increased. Multipositive stool cultures (0.05%) occurred only in children ≤3.1 years, all of whom had prior antibiotic use. These findings underscore age-related gut defense maturation and highlight the importance of prudent antibiotic stewardship in early childhood.
