Abstract

The stability of a fully-developed laminar pipe flow with a super imposed sinusoidal modulation was studied as a function of the mean and modulation Reynolds number and the Stokes parameter. The study was carried out in a long straight water tank via LDV techniques using a He-Ne laser and counter type signal processor. The purpose of the study was to obtain the stability instability boundary in the three dimensional parameter space and to understand the effects of the frequency and amplitude of excitation on the pipe flow and on instability over wide ranges of the three non-dimensional parameters.
