Dr. Shen is a general surgical pathologist with interest in genitourinary (GU) pathology. After completing his residency training in Anatomical and Clinical Pathology and fellowship training in Surgical Pathology, Dr. Shen became an Assistant Professor at Baylor College of Medicine before joining the Department of Pathology and Genomic Medicine at Houston Methodist Hospital in 2004. In 2005, he joined the Weill Medical College faculty and is a Full Member of the Research Institute.

Dr. Shen is a general surgical pathologist with strong subspecialty expertise in GU cancers. He is currently the Director of Surgical Pathology and Fellowship Director of GU and Medical Kidney Pathology at the Houston Methodist Hospital. He has published more than 150 articles, primarily in GU pathology. He has been a co-editor of three textbooks, authored several chapters in GU pathology, and was a contributing author for the 2016 WHO Classification of Tumors of the Urinary System and Male Genital Organs. Dr. Shen serves as a Section Editor for Archives of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine and an ad hoc reviewer for several pathology and urology journals. He is currently a member of both the Surgical Pathology Committee of College of American Pathologist (CAP) and the Education Committee of United States Canadian Academy of Pathology (USCAP). Dr. Shen has been teaching urologic pathology for trainees in pathology and urology for over 23 years, and has been recognized nationally and internationally as a consultant and invited speaker.

Research interests

Dr. Shen’s research involves identifying morphologic and molecular neoplasm abnormalities and correlating these with diagnosis, prognosis, and in some instances, future treatment. He is involved in independent and collaborative studies using conventional histomorphologic techniques, immunohistochemical methods, tissue microarray, and new molecular methods to study cancers of the kidney, urinary bladder, prostate, and testis.
