Dr. Balasubramanyam received her Bachelor’s of Science degree in Biology at the University of Texas at Austin with high honors. She was a dean’s honored graduate, an award given to less than 1% of the graduating senior class. Dr. Balasubramanyam was a member of Dr. Lauren Ehrlich’s lab, focused on elucidating the role of the thymic microenvironment in propagating T- cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia. This research not only led to an honors thesis, but also resulted in a publication in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. After graduation, she received her medical degree at McGovern Medical School. During her medical school training, she had the privilege of working at MD Anderson Cancer Center in an immunotherapy lab with Dr. Michael Curran, and studied the effects of T-cell checkpoint blockade in prostate cancer, understanding the role of immunotherapies in treating solid tumors. This research led to a co-publication in the Journal of Clinical Investigation and stimulated her interest in pursuing immunology further. Subsequently, she completed her Internal Medicine Residency at Baylor College of Medicine. During residency, she had the opportunity to work with Dr. Carla Davis and Dr. Joud Hajjar at Texas Children’s Hospital (TCH), studying hyper-IgE syndromes, food allergies, chronic idiopathic eosinophilic pneumonia, and metastatic liposarcoma presenting with hypereosinophilia, all of which have led to publications and/or abstract/poster presentations. She went on to complete her Allergy and Immunology Fellowship at National Jewish Health, the leading respiratory hospital in the nation, and University of Colorado, where she received rigorous clinical training under the supervision of several experts in the field of allergy and immunology. During her training, she was involved in clinical research investigating the role of intimate partner violence and traumatic brain injury in severe asthma and how that can affect management of the disease. She is double board certified in internal medicine and allergy and immunology.
