Research interests

The Gao laboratory is dedicated to developing both computational methods and novel technologies for analyzing single-cell genomics.  Dr. Gao and colleagues recently developed an integrative Bayesian segmentation approach called CopyKAT (Copy number Karyotyping of Aneuploid Tumors) to estimate genomic copy number profiles from scRNA-seq data (Nature Biotechnology, 2020). During her postdoctoral training at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Dr. Nicholas Navin's lab,  she led the development of a paradigm shift punctuated copy number evolution model in solid tumors that challenges the Darwinian Gradualism (Nature Genetics, 2016), a bi-mode chemoresistance evolution model in triple-negative breast cancer (Cell, 2018), and a high throughput nanogrid single nuclear RNA sequencing technology that opened the avenue of analyzing single-cell transcriptomes from archival frozen tissue samples (Nature Communications, 2017).

Moving forward, the Gao Lab at Houston Methodist Research Institute is focusing on developing novel single-cell sequencing technologies and bioinformatics tools for analyzing high throughput and multi-layers of single-cell data.  The Gao Lab is at the cutting edge of applying novel omics approaches to dissect the cellular components and their dynamic changes during human disease progression.
