Marc Garbey, PhD, joined Houston Methodist in 2015 as Scientific Director of the newly formed Center for Computational Surgery. Prior to joining Houston Methodist, Dr. Garbey was a Professor of Computer Science in the Department of Computer Science and Professor of Computational Science in the Department of Biology and Biochemistry at the University of Houston. During his time at University of Houston, Dr. Garbey also served as the Director of Research Integration for the Houston Methodist Institute for Technology, Innovation & Education (MITIE). In his new role as the Scientific Director of the Center for Computational Surgery at Houston Methodist, Dr. Garbey will continue his work developing novel applications of computational science to advance the field of surgery. Projects currently include real-time operating room intelligence systems to improve efficiency and trainee competency. Dr. Garbey completed his doctorate in applied mathematics from École Centrale de Lyon and a habilitation in applied mathematics from L’Université de Lyon.

Research interests

Dr. Garbey is Scientific Director of the Center for Computational Surgery at Houston Methodist.

His philosophy in science is to solve one problem at a time and start from the real application with interdisciplinary collaborations led by the final application. The mathematic, computer science and algorithmic development must follow and adapt to the needs of the application problem. The foundation of the Computational Surgery International NEtwork (Cosine –http://www.computationalsurgery.org) in partnership with Dr. Barbara Bass, chair of the department of Surgery at Houston Methodist Hospital, follows this strategy.

Because Dr. Garbey now spends most of his time working with surgeons, he has been rather productive on the technological front recently with 2 provisional and 3 worldwide permanent patents filed that benefit from his extensive experience in solving practical problems.
