Dr. Harms earned his MD from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston prior to completing his residency training in obstetrics and gynecology at the Christus St. Joseph Hospital in Houston, Texas. Dr. Harms earned numerous honors including Highest CREOG Exam Score in 2000, 2001, and 2002 during residency and he continued to garner numerous honors after joining the attending staff there in 2002, including CREOG Educational Faculty of the Year (2003) and Christus St. Joseph Ob/Gyn Residency Faculty of the Year (2005). Dr. Harms joined the attending staff at Methodist in 2006 and was voted Best Teacher in Obstetrics and Gynecology for The Methodist Hospital Ob/Gyn Residency Program in 2007, 2009, & 2011. Dr. Harms served as the Associate Program Director from 2005 until he was named the Program Director in 2014. He continues in this leadership position to date.
Dr. Harms is passionate about medical education and, in addition to Ob/Gyn Resident training, he is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the Weill Cornell Medical College, Texas A&M University College of Medicine, and University of Houston College of Medicine where he serves as the site Ob/Gyn Clerkship Director. He has been recognized with numerous medical school awards including the Weill Cornell Medical College Ob/Gyn Clerkship Teaching Faculty of the Year (2016) and the APGO Teaching Faculty of the Year- Texas A&M COM (2018, 2020-24). Dr. Harms has served as the Executive Ob/Gyn Clerkship Director for the Texas A&M COM since 2017.

Dr. Harms conducts clinical trials in Obstetrical care and medical education.
