Dr. Joshua Swan is an active clinician, clinical researcher, and educator. After graduating with a Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Mississippi in 2009, Dr. Swan moved to Houston, Texas to conduct two years of postgraduate clinical training in hospital pharmacy and critical care medicine at Houston Methodist Hospital. In July 2011, Dr. Swan became a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice at Texas Southern University and a Clinical Pharmacist Specialist in the Department of Pharmacy at Houston Methodist Hospital. He conducts clinical research in collaboration with the Texas Southern University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Houston Methodist Hospital Department of Pharmacy, and Houston Methodist Hospital Department of Surgery. He provides clinical pharmacy care and conducts a majority of his research in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit at Houston Methodist Hospital.

In 2013, Dr. Swan joined the Center of Outcomes Research in the Department of Surgery at the Houston Methodist Research Institute where he conducts clinical studies to improve the outcomes of surgical intensive care unit patients. Dr. Swan served on the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists New Practitioners Forum Science and Research Advisory Group from 2011 to 2013 and is currently a member of the Board of Directors for the Texas Chapter of the Society of Critical Care Medicine since 2013.

Research interests

Dr. Swan’s research program focuses on clinical research and health services research aimed at improving the outcomes and healthcare of patients admitted to the intensive care unit. Current research efforts include evaluation of chlorhexidine bathing to prevent healthcare-associated infections in the surgical intensive care, performance improvement of delirium screening and documentation in the surgical intensive care unit, and performance improvement efforts to improve the quality of pharmacy resident major research projects within the Houston Methodist Hospital Department of Pharmacy.
