Hardeep Singh, MD, MPH, is the inaugural director of the Houston Methodist Safety, Quality and Well-Being Institute. Before his appointment in April 2026, he was a professor of medicine at Baylor College of Medicine and the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center and served as co-chief of the Health Policy, Quality and Informatics Program at the Center for Innovations in Quality, Effectiveness and Safety. With nearly 400 peer-reviewed papers, his research has informed major national and international patient safety initiatives and policy reports from the National Academy of Medicine, the National Quality Forum, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, the World Health Organization, and the White House. He has co-chaired numerous panels and workgroups and helped develop quality and safety guidance resources for clinical care, including the Safer Dx Checklist, Measure Dx, and Calibrate Dx to help achieve diagnostic excellence. He also co-developed the CMS-required ONC SAFER guides to promote safe EHR use.

Dr. Singh has been elected to the International Society for Quality in Health Care Academy of Quality and Safety and serves as a thought leader for the Institute for Healthcare Improvement Lucian Leape Institute. He was also elected as a Fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics for his significant and sustained contributions to biomedical informatics. His work has been recognized with numerous prestigious awards, including the AcademyHealth Alice S. Hersh New Investigator Award, the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers from President Obama, the VA Health System Impact Award, the John M. Eisenberg Patient Safety and Quality Award for Individual Lifetime Achievement, and the Under Secretary’s Award for Outstanding Achievement in Health Systems Research - the highest honor for a VA health systems researcher.

Dr. Singh’s recent contributions include system-level strategies and policy approaches to accelerate climate action and environmental sustainability in healthcare. He is a steering committee member of the National Academy of Medicine’s Action Collaborative on Achieving a Climate Resilient and Sustainable Health Sector and co-leads its Health Care Delivery Working Group. He helped develop several national resources to advance sustainability, improve quality, and reduce low-value care.  His work was recognized with the 2024 U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Green Champions Award.
