Professional Information

Alberto O. Barroso is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Department of Internal Medicine, Weill Cornell Medical College, in Houston, Texas.

He graduated from the Federal University Medical School at Rio de Janeiro, in December 1966. After two years of post-graduate training at the Hospital de Ipanema in Rio, he practiced Internal Medicine with particular interest in the pre and post-operative management of the critically ill surgical patient. This gave him the opportunity of introducing Intravenous Nutritional Support to the surgical patient.

Dr. Barroso was one of the pioneers in introducing Total Parenteral Nutrition in Brazil, being one of the Founders of the Brazilian Society of Parenteral Nutrition, serving as the first ever Secretary, then President Elect. He resigned the position of President in order to travel to Houston, to join the Department of Surgery at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston, as Assistant Professor of Medicine and Surgery, where he participated in the development of the Home Parenteral Nutrition Program in 1980-1981.

In 1981 he was accepted in the GI Fellowship Program at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. After the two years of training, he joined the Full Time Faculty at Baylor College of Medicine, being actively involved in developing a Nutritional Support Clinical Service, as well as participating in the training of new GI Fellows. He has always been actively involved in teaching medical students, Internal Medicine Residents and GI Fellows, throughout his whole career.

In 1987 he left the Full Time Faculty position at the Medical School, in order to open his Office for the Private Practice of Gastroenterology. He continued to participate, however, in the teaching of Medical Students, Residents and GI Fellows at the Houston Methodist Hospital.

In May of 2013, he closed his Office for Private Practice, and joined the Physician Organization at the Houston Methodist Hospital, as Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine, in the GI Division of the Internal Medicine Department.

Dr. Barroso is a member of numerous professional societies, and numerous Medical Staff Committees at the Houston Methodist Hospital. He is the Elected Deputy Chair of the Internal Medicine Department since 2011, being re-elected in 2012 and again in 2015 for another three year term. He is also the Associate Program Director for the GI Fellowship Program at the Houston Methodist Hospital since the beginning of the Program, in 2014. He is also the Course Administrator for the weekly Multidisciplinary Gastrointestinal Conference, which is the longest continuously running clinical conference at the Houston Methodist Hospital for over 40 years. He also holds an appointment as Adjunct Associate Professor of Medicine at the MD Anderson Cancer Center Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition.
